Ethiopia is officially known as the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Situated   at the Northern east of Africa, an area of 1,112,000 square kilometers. Ethiopia Shares its boundaries with Eritrea North and North east, Djibouti Easter part, Somalia south east and south, Kenya south and Sudan in the western side.

The capital of Ethiopia is Addis Ababa founded in 1886 by Empress Taytu  as Addis Ababa, currently Addis Ababa is  known as the capital of Africa by hosting many international organization headquarters, UN for Africa (ECA), the AU (African union) and other Diplomatic mission for Africa.


The Ethiopian currency is called Birr and is issued by the National Bank of Ethiopia. One Birr is made up of 100 cents. The Bank notes are in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, and 100 Birr and the coins are in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 ,  50 and 1 Birr  cents. Visitors may import unlimited foreign currency. Foreign currency can be changed at banks and hotels and the receipts for all exchange transactions must be retained as this may be required by Customs on departure. Visitors may change back any leftover Ethiopian Birr to their chosen foreign currency at the airport before departure and must provide the declaration form with all receipts for exchange transactions. Please note that the exchange rate fluctuates from day to day.  Banks are open from 8 AM (2 o'clock local time) to 5:30 PM (11:30 o'clock local time). Some banks close for lunch between 1 PM (7 o'clock local time) and 2 PM (8 o'clock local time).

Money Transfer and Courier Services  

Money transfers can be made through Western Union and Money Gram. Both have representative branches in Addis Ababa and outside in some of the major towns and make their services available from private and national Banks. For courier services, DHL, FedEx, UPS, TNT, and EMS have offices in Addis Ababa.

Time and Calendar

Ethiopia is in GMT +3 hours’ time Zone, and follows the unique Julian calendar which is seven years and eight months behind the Gorgonian calendar, consists of thirteen month, the twelve months consists of 30 days each and the last (13th Month) will have 5 or 6 days during leap year, The New Year fall on the 11th of September.

Addis Ababa has two 5 stat hotels- the Hilton Addis and the Sheraton Addis  (Luxury collection) and a growing number of tourist class hotels. Standards vary outside the capital, but apart from some remote areas where camping is unavoidable it is generally possible to get relatively clean rooms with en suite toilet and shower.

Telephone, Tele fax, Internet, e-mail and postal facilities are available in the country. Internet services are available in major cities and towns. The international dialing code for Ethiopia is +251.
Customs: Duty-free import are permitted for up to: 200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars or 1/2 lb of tobacco
1 liter of alcoholic beverages1/2 liter, or two bottles of  perfumes Visitors may export souvenirs with a value not exceeding Birr 500, although some articles (such as animal skins and antiques) require an export permit.

Ethiopian Seasons

  • Summer (Kiremt or Meher ) June, July and August are the summer season. Heavy rain falls in these three months.
  • Spring (Tseday ) September, October and November are the spring season sometime known as the harvest season.
  • Bega (winter) - December, January and February are the dry season with frost in morning especially in January.
  • Belg (Autumn) - March, April and May are the autumn season with occasional showers. May is the hottest month in Ethiopia.


Warm clothing is essential throughout the year in the highland regions. You may wish to bring light cotton clothing for use in the hot areas in the country. A hat and sunglasses are  must!!


Amharic is the official language, but there are more than 80 other local languages which is dialectic to some 200. English and Arabic are wildly used and also Italian and French are spoken.


A large number of religions are traditionally practiced in Ethiopia, the most numerous today being Orthodox Christianity, followed by Islam. Protestant Christian and Traditional beliefs, usually categorized as Animism, attract a decreasing number of followers.

Entry Points

Travelers using rail ways Dewele on the Djibouti border is the only point of entry to Ethiopia and those driving to Ethiopia via surface, Moyale (in Kenya), Humera and Metema (in Sudan), and again Galafi in Djibouti are the available means of entries. All arrivals undergo full customs and immigration checks. For the major part of travelers accessing via flight, the Bole International Airport is the only terminal available in the Capital Addis Ababa though there are other domestic airports and airstrips serving domestic needs.

When to come to  Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s climate is typically very mild, with temperatures on the wide-ranging highlands averaging below 20°C. Only on the lowland fringes of western, eastern and southern Ethiopia can temperatures soar past 30°C.

The heaviest rains traditionally fall June to early October, making the rest of the year prime time to visit. Directly after the rains the highlands are wonderfully green, covered with wildflowers and sublime for trekking .

Business hours

Banks, post offices and telecommunications offices are open at least 8.30am to 11am and 1.30pm to 3.30pm weekdays and 8.30am to 11am Saturday. Government offices’ hours are 8.30am to 12.30pm (to 11.30am Friday) and 1.30pm to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. Shop hours are 8.30am to 1.30pm and 2.30pm to 5.30pm weekdays.

Day1: Arrival - Addis – Bahir Dar

After lunch, visit the Trinity Cathedral, Mausoleum of emperor MenelikII at Bààta Church and finally Merkato – the largest open market in Africa. In the evening, fly from Addis to Bahir Dar. Day2:  Bahir Dar – Island Monasteries on lake Tana – Blue Nile Falls.

Morning after breakfast   drive to the small town of Tiss Abay (32km rough road) to visit the impressive Blue Nile Falls, locally known as Tis Issat means in Amharic: 'Smoke of Fire'. Much of the water is diverted for Hydro electric Generation plant but it is still worth visiting for remaining waterfalls, walking around, a Portuguese Bridge (17Century) and the country side. The area around the waterfall is amazingly fertile and the Amhara people who live here farm wheat, sorghum and Teff (from which Injera, our national bread, is made). On the way after the Blue Nile, visit the market of Bahir Dar Town where you can find the pottery, traditional hand-made woven clothes, and Woito Basket market. After lunch; take a chartered boat trip on Lake Tana to visit monasteries (constructed during 14 up to 19 century). You will visit only the most accessible and representative of the monasteries on the lake, still serving their original function: Ura Kidane Mehret, and Azwa Maryam (in Zeghie Peninsula), Kibran Gabriel (prohibited for women) & Entos Eyesus.  Overnight: Hotel - Bahir Dar

Day 3: Drive Bahir Dar –Castles of Gondar

Today after breakfast drive from Bahir Dar to Gondar (187km asphalt road). On the way visit the hill top of Bezawit   palace (roughly 5km after Gojjam – Gondar border Bridge). At this point, you are visiting the Palace of Emperor Haile Selassie I (entering & photographing the palace is prohibited), panoramic view of the town of Bahir Dar, the Source of the Blue Nile - leaving its source from Lake Tana. Again on the way; visit the Awramba/ Awra Amba Community & landscapes. 

After lunch break in Gondar, visit the Castles of emperor Fassiladas, his swimming pool, the empress Minitab’s Palace, the Banquet Room of Emperor Bakaffa… the 17century church of Debre  Birhan Sillassie (Light of Trinity). Overnight: Hotel – Gondar.

Day 4:  Fly Gondar – Rock Hewn churches of Lalibela

Early in the Morning transfer to Gondar airport to fly to Lalibela. Upon arrival you will met by Myseru Tour and Travel’s professional representative, then be transferred to you hotel for check in. After some hours for relaxing and Breakfast start discovering the first group of the 8thy wonder of the World, 13th century Rock Hewn Churches of Lalibela. Day5: Lalibela Circuit

Early  morning. Trek to Asheten Mariam (optional) for a panoramic view of the region and a mountain Church named Asheten. After breathing on the top (more than3000m), descend down to Lalibela (at 2630m above sea level), one of the most fascinating historical sites of Ethiopia. After lunch and a short siesta, continue exploring the fascinating churches (Second group): 7.Bete Amanuel, 8.Bete Marqorewos, 9.Bete Abba Libanos, 10.Bete Gabriel -Rufael and11. Bet Giyorgis is the most elegant of all Lalibela churches, which lies somewhat isolated in the southwest part of the town on a sloping rock terrace. Day 6: Lalibela – Addis – Departure

The attractions that we visit in Gondar includes: Castles of Gondar which is included in the World Heritage List. the Royal Fasiledes Bath and the Church of Debre Berhan Selassie with its unique murals. Day 4: Fly Lalibela

We take a short flight to Lalibela then drive to the town where all the 11 monolithic Rock Hewn Churches of Lalibela are situated. Today we visit the first group of six churches that lie in rock cradles one behind the other: Bet Golgotha, Bet Mika'el, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel and Bet Medhane Alem. Bet Medhane Alem, the largest one, is built like a Greek Temple in a corner there are three empty graves symbolically dug for biblical patriarchs Jacob, Abraham and Isaac .  Overnight Hotel: Lalibela.

Day 5: In Lalibela

After breakfast a mule ride to the 13th rock hewn monastery of Asheten Mariam. The church is situated on top of a mountain  at an altitude of 3150 meters. This will take about 4 hours. We return back to the town for lunch. In the afternoon, visit the other groups of Rock churches of Lalibela Bet Giyorgis, possibly the most elegant of all the Lalibela churches, lies somewhat isolated in the southwest part of the village on a sloping rock terrace. It can only be reached through a tunnel. The group of four, south of the Jordan River, comprise of Bet Emanuel, Bet Mercurios, Bet Abba Libanos and Bet Gabriel-Rufa'el. Overnight Hotel

Day 6: Fly Lalibela – Axum and Sightseeing of Axum

After breakfast fly to Axum. The   ancient city of Axum is found close to Ethiopia's northern border. It marks the location of the heart of ancient Ethiopia, when the Kingdom of Axum was the most powerful state between the Eastern Roman Empire and Persia. After  breakfast departure for Debark town (100 Kms from Gondar), where the head quarter of Semien Mountains National Park is found. Here we pay the entrance fees and a scout and a local guide will accompany us. Then we continue driving to the gravel road to Buyit Ras, the first campsite of the National Park and your lodge for the night.   On this drive you will gain your first impression of the scale and beauty of this highland region, the extraordinary scenery, enjoying the endemic Gelada Baboons and the bone breaker giant bird Lammergeyer roaring around.

 Day 5- Drive Semien National Park – Axum ( 280km )

Morning after good breakfast drive to the Historical site of Axum en route  enjoying very beautiful and spectacular landscape along the Semien Mountains and Tekeze Gorge. The road descends from 3100 meters through hairpin bends down the mountain side to 1400 metres in just 40kms! The drive down and back up to Adi Arkay showcases not only the immensely beautiful Simien Mountain massifs but also the people who eke out an existence in this unforgiving countryside.  The drive continues through the Tekeze valley, crossing the Tekeze River, and onto Axum  in the far north.  Overnight Hotel-Axum.

Day 6: Visit of historical and archaeological sites in Axum

The   ancient city of Aksum is found close to Ethiopia's northern border. It marks the location of the heart of ancient Ethiopia, when the Kingdom of Aksum was the most powerful state between the Eastern Roman Empire and Persia. The archaeological and historical attractions in Axum include: the archaeological museum,  monolithic steles or obelisks, the tombs of King Kaleb and King Gebre Meskal, and the legendary Bath of the Queen of Sheba, and the ruins of ancient palace of  Queen Sheba.  We also visit the new and the old Cathedral of St Mary of Zion and the sanctuary that houses the original Arc of the covenant.  The 16th Century Cathedral of St Mary of Zion was probably built on an earlier 4th century church, and is the holiest church in Ethiopia. In its sanctuary is said to rest the original Ark of the Covenant. O/n  -Hotel- Axum

Day 7 : Drive from Axum to Mekele

After breakfast drive through the historical town of Adwa, which is the major African   battlefield and drive to the very small town of Yeha to visit the 5th century B.C imposing ruins of Yeha  temple. It was a large pre-Christian temple consisting of a single oblong chamber. The temple is believed to be the oldest standing building in the country. You will also visit the 6th century A.D church of Aba Afse –the church, sharing the same compound with the temple, is rectangular in shape. Continue driving to Mekele-the capital of Tegray region en route visit Rock church of Wekro  Cherkos and Abreha WE Asbeha. 

Overnight:  Mekele -  Hotel. 

Day 8: Mekele - Lalibela

On this day you will have the longest drive through the rough nature of road but nice to experience along with the magnificent scenery (gigantic, ups and downs landscape). You will have a chance to visit Lake Ashenge and good for birding. Proceed to Lalibela for dinner and overnight at JerusalHotel Hotel. 

Day9: Lalibela

Full day sightseeing tour of Lalibela:  Lalibela, famous for its rock hewn churches dating back 800 years, There are no less than 1000 churches in the Lasta Region of Lalibela, some hidden in enormous caves, but it's exceptional to find 11 churches of such master craftsmanship in one locale. These brilliant feats of engineering and architecture are often referred to as the "Eighth wonder of the world". Upon arrival transfer to your hotel for check in .  Dinner and overnight in hotel with a pleasant garden and a Lakeside view of Lake Tana.

Day 4: Tour in Bahir Dar

Early morning a boat trip will be arranged to Ethiopia 's largest  Lake  , Lake Tana known for its middle age island monasteries. Lake Tana is the source of the longest river in Africa, the Blue Nile and home for 37 islands. We will have the opportunity to visit the Zege peninsula for its famous 14th century monasteries of Ura Kidanemihret, Azewa Mariam and the island monastery of Kibran Gebriel (where only men are allowed) for their wonderful 16th century mural paintings, crowns, crosses and many old church treasures.  In the afternoon after lunch break and relax drive some 35 kms to the Blue Nile Falls, Bezawit Place and it is also possible for bird lovers. Overnight Hotel – Bahir Dar.

Day 5: Bahir Dar- Gondar and tour of Gondar

Early morning start driving to Gondar which is 180Km Bahir Dar. you have only to stroll through the banqueting halls and gaze down from the balconies of the many castles and palaces here to imagine the intrigue and pageantry that took place back in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when Gondar , then the Ethiopian capital, was home to a number of emperors and warlords, courtiers and kings. After settling in Ghoa Ghion / Taye   hotel in Gondar;   we will start our visit to these palaces, residences and baths of Fasilidas. Gondar is also the site of numerous fine churches, a number of which have survived to this day. Late in the afternoon, we will have the opportunity to visit the church of Debre Berham Selassie,  translated to mean “Light of the Trinity”, which is located at the summit of a hill and surrounded by fortified walls. Dinner and overnight at  your hotel.

Day 6: From Gondar , we will travel in and off-the-road vehicle passing through mountainous areas with spectacular panoramas, approaching Quara, the national park of the Simien Mountains . The Semin Massif is one of the greatest sculptures on the planet: peaks, canyons, gorges, clefts and pointed amethyst-colored pinnacles like obelisks. Overnight Debark

Day 7: Drive Semien MT NP  – Axum (354KM)

Drive to Axum for about 4 hours en route  enjoying the magnificent views over the Semein Mountains and the Tekeze Valley. Sightseeing of Axum including the King Ezana’s inscriptions, the Archeological museum, the church of Zion, the obelisks. Overnight stay at  hotel Axum .

Day 8: Drive to Mekele via Adawa En route visit includes the ruined moon temple of Yeha, Monastery of Debre Damo, rock churches of Wukro kiros and Abreha-Atsbeha. Overnight stay at  hotel in Mekele

Day 9: Drive to Lalibela via Lake Ashenge: Full day drive. Overnight stay hotel- Laliblela .

Day 10: Visit of the11 rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. Overnight stay at  same Hotel.

Day 11: Drive to komobolcha via Weldia, visit of Haik Estefanos en route. Overnight stay at Tekile hotel in Kombolcha

Day 12: Drive to Addis Ababa then transfer to your hotel.
